Young people’s perspectives
In summer 2026 we asked young people across North Devon to answer that question through a 30 film.
There were no right or wrong answers and no expectation of professional equipment or filmmaking experience.
We simply wanted to hear young people’s own voices and see nature through their eyes.
The films we received offer a glimpse into the different ways young people connect with the natural world. Some focus of particular places or landscapes. Others look closely at small details, everyday experiences and the feelings that nature can create. Together they show that nature means something different to everyone.
Making the films
Alongside inviting young people to make their own films, filmmaker Matt Biggs visited different locations, local groups and community events across North Devon, offering support to anyone who wanted to take part.
These sessions gave young people the chance to explore ideas, experiment with filming and editing, and think about what nature means to them.
The project was deliberately simple. A phone was enough. The important thing was the idea and the voice behind it.
Sharing the films
The films were shown as part of the Plough Earth Film Festival alongside award winning film Derek vs Derek at The Plough Arts Centre in September 2026, giving the young filmmakers an opportunity to see their work on the big screen and share their perspectives with an audience.
All of the films are also available to watch online, so these young voices can reach a wider audience.
What did we learn?
The project gave young people a space to stop and think about their own relationship with nature, and to communicate that in a creative way.
It also gave us a chance to listen.
The films show that connecting with nature does not always mean going somewhere remote or wild. It can be found in familiar places, everyday moments and small details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Most importantly, the project put young people’s own voices at the centre of the conversation about nature and the environment.

This opportunity is part of the North Devon Biosphere Communities Project, funded by the National Lottery Climate Action Fund and delivered in partnership with Beaford.
The project supports young people to explore their relationship with nature, raising awareness, encouraging learning, and sharing knowledge through creativity. It provides opportunities to express ideas, share experiences, and inspire positive action for the natural world.
