In July 2025 we attended the North Devon Biosphere Discovery Day at Merton, a vibrant celebration of the unique landscape and community within the North Devon Biosphere Reserve.

The North Devon Biosphere, recognised by UNESCO in 2002 for its outstanding universal significance, encompasses a rich mosaic of villages, farmland, coast, and moorland. Merton, the host village for the day, is at the heart of this extraordinary natural and cultural environment.

The Discovery Day, organised by The Devonshire Association, offered a programme of free activities designed to engage visitors with the exceptional biodiversity, heritage, and ongoing conservation efforts in the region. It was an inspiring opportunity to connect with local people and organisations dedicated to preserving the special qualities of the Biosphere for future generations.

This event was held in the village of Merton on Saturday 5th July 2025

We were proud to offer an exhibition of the work of James Ravilious as part of this event, showcasing his remarkable photography that captures the spirit and character of rural Devon. Below is a presentation that accompanied the exhibition titled ‘Merton as seen through the Beaford Archive’ curated by Exeter University intern student Emily Blackley. Read her curator’s statement and enjoy her perspective through a collection that spans from 1850-1999.
