Exploring today’s land through our ancestors’ eyes.

Ages 13+

LIVE introduction by Lisa Schneidau followed by the screening of a pre-recorded Earth, Water, Fire! performance (filmed at Bridge Chambers, Barnstaple on 16 March 2023 in front of an audience of 48 as part of a North Devon rural tour). Followed by a LIVE Q&A with the project panel.

In the times before modern science, things were explained differently. Tales told through generations passed on the knowledge and wisdom of people and place, wrapped in the epic journeys of heroes, heroines and dragons.

Devon-based storyteller Lisa Schneidau spent the autumn working with Dr Claire Kelly of Plymouth University and a wide range of people from across Northern Devon. They explored the latest climate and environmental science, met people battling with modern monsters, and explored how science and stories can entwine to illuminate the of new generations living in the long-established landscapes around us.

What hero stories would our ancestors tell of rural life today? Our landscapes are rapidly changing, the maidens have attitude and armour is pointless… Lisa, with musician Emma Welton and filmmaker Matt Biggs, present a new contemporary storytelling show, directed by Paula Crutchlow, that connects us across the centuries.

Supported by Arts Council England, Plymouth University, North Devon & Torridge Councils and Beaford.
