be inspired - beaford Virtual Spring/Summer Season 2020 | Lost Dog Dance - Juliet in Lock-down

Because we postponed our Beaford Spring/Summer Season 2020, we have commissioned the remaining artists in the line-up to make something for us to share with you online.

It turns out Romeo & Juliet didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding, they grew up and lived happily ever after…well, they lived.

Now they’re in their 40s, in the grips of a mid-life crisis and have been in lockdown like the rest of us but with the added pressures of being the poster couple for romantic love.

Beaford along with support from Rural Touring Dance Initiative have commissioned Lost Dog Dance Theatre Company to share their interpretation of how lock-down has looked for these once star-crossed lovers with brilliantly comedic yet stunningly skilful results...

The French lock-down happened faster than anyone expected and Romeo ended up being trapped in the UK. Juliet was still in Paris. They thought the problem could be resolved within days but days turned into weeks. They tried to solve both their logistical and emotional problems over zoom. It was not the right medium. Tempers frayed.

Here we see Juliet dancing in the garden. The song she hears is the one Romeo claims was playing when they first laid eyes on each other. She remembers Romeo’s teenage desire for her and his strange dance moves, but these are confusing times and the object of her desire is now not Romeo but a symbol of this incessant domesticity she is trapped in.
