Almshouses are accommodation owned by charities which provide relief to people who need it. These Almshouses were established in medieval times, and it became Penrose Almshouses in the 1800s. You are welcome to wonder through the entrance and into the courtyard where you will find more information.

In the middle of the courtyard is a water pump – in the photograph you can see a woman filling up her bucket with water. Originally the water was likely to have come from the River Taw which would allow people quick access to fresh water. Then they would boil the water so it would be safer to use. Consider the changes to our water supply and consumption since this photograph.
